Target markets
Thermoelectric modules are quite versatile in the ways that they can be used, so the applications where they are used also tend to be varied. Because of their versatility, it’s almost easier to categorize the applications that thermoelectric modules are used in by the functionality used.
Thermal cycling applications
Biomedical, TCU, Chillers, Instrumentation — because thermoelectric modules can be used for both heating an cooling, a common application category is thermal cycling. There are a numerous applications which require thermal cycling. One major application is DNA amplification which stems from the biomedical arena. In this application, high-throughput and durability under a heavy duty temperature cycle is required. Ferrotec’s 72-Series thermoelectric modules combine newly development thermoelectric material with additional technology specifically designed for thermal cycling applications. The 72 series delivers significantly longer operational life during thermal cycling and high throughput to increase productivity.
Telecom/Opto-electronics
Laser, photo diode, cold plate — thermoelectric modules are often used to move heat from lasers and heat-generating optical components to enable increased performance. Telecom components are subject to very high-reliability testing criteria, and Ferrotec’s 20 Series thermoelectric modules are designed to exceed that reliability performance threshold. Ferrotec has conducted Telcordia GR-468-CORE testing on the 20 Series of modules along with additional reliability testing which verify the products reliability.
Deep cooling applications
CCD, IR cooling, sensors — using thermoelectrics to drive component temperatures far lower than normal can expand the sensitivity of detection components. Deep cooling is often required to cool detectors, CCD and other sensors which make thermoelectric modules a critical component in these systems. Thermoelectric modules are more compact, lighter, easy to handle than other cooling methods within a range of environments and applications. Ferrotec’s 20 Series thermoelectric modules offer deep cooling due to improved material efficiency which enables components to operate at low temperatures resulting in increased effectiveness.
Consumer applications
Wine cabinet, mini-refrigerators, air conditioners — consumer applications will often employ thermoelectrics to provide cooling and temperature control in applications where traditional cooling systems wouldn’t be feasible. Small size and weight, ability to cool below ambient, and no moving parts make the advantages of using TMs infinite. Ferrotec is a leading high volume manufacturer of thermoelectrics which enables us to offer valued customers over 260 standard modules types from our full range product line at very competitive pricing.
Power generation
Waste heat recovery, remote sensor power, emergency power sources — traditionally electrical power is applied to a thermoelectric to heat or cool, however heat can also be applied to any thermoelectric module to generate a small amount of power. This basic concept allows for any system to generate power under certain conditions.
